The Zeiss ZM lenses are for the Leica M8 rangefinders. Rangefinder lenses (generally speaking) are not compatible with film or digital SLRs because they extended to far into the chamber. Rangefinders do NOT have a mirror, so the rear of lens is very, very close to the film plane. This is part of the reason why rangefinders are smaller and also have less vibration (mirror vibration).

thank you Pebble Place for you explanation. I really appreciate the db for zeiss lenses and canon cameras. I am having trouble locating the lenses to buy. Most of the usuals just have a couple or three. I am looking for the zeiss distagon 35mm f 2.8 lens. Do you have any suggestions, I too am in Dallas but of course can order from anywhere. thanks again

Rarely do I buy a used lens from a store. Usually it's from the FM buy/sell board: http://www.fredmiranda.com/forum/board/10 Of course the other option is Ebay. When picking a 35/2.8, ask the seller whether or not they adjusted the focus ring for infinity focus. On many lenses the rubber can be rolled back on the focus ring which exposes some screws. These screws are loosened and then the lens is adjusted until it reaches infinity focus. Obviously this is a bad thing - novices are randomly adjusting lenses out of spec so that the lens doesn't hit the mirror and/or so it reaches infinity focus on the ABC adapter - many cases a crappy adapter. Then they sell the lens and the buyer ends up with a lens that's no longer in proper calibration. This won't be so risky on a 35/2.8 because it doesn't have a floating element system, but it can't be good either.
