CONTAX 85mm F2.8 SONNAR
Adapter and fit feedback
www.pebbleplace.com/Personal/Contax_db.html

This thread is for ongoing discussions and experiences regarding the 85mm F2.8 Sonnar on the Canon dSLRs such as the 40D, 1D Mark III, 1Ds Mark III, Digital Rebels and all other Canon dSLRs. If adding an entry about a lens & adapter, please include:

1) Whether the lens is a AE or MM
2) Whether the lens is made in Germany or Japan
3) Which adapter you are using
4) If the lens works properly at its minimum focus distance and at infinity

NOTE - THIS THREAD IS FOR THE F2.8 VERSION - NOT THE F1.2 OR F1.4.

CANON 5D FEEBACK WITH A CAMERAQUEST ADAPTER
SUCCESS!!!

This past week "I. Asha" submitted the following feedback regarding the Contax 85mm F2.8 Sonnar MM (I did clean up the format) -

Quote:

The following contax lenses worked on my Canon 5D using the CameraQuest adapter:

AE MOUNT

• Contax 25mm F2.8 AE
• Contax 28mm F2.8 AE
• Contax 35mm F2.8 AE
• Contax 60mm F2.8 AE

MM MOUNT

• Contax 50mm F1.4 MM
Contax 85mm F2.8 MM
• Contax 28-85mm MM
• Contax 35-135mm MM
• Contax 80-200mm F4 MM

Surprisingly, the Contax 100mm F3.5mm MM would not work. Additionally, a Yashica ML 21mm F3.5 worked fine.

No changes to the database since the lens was already marked "Y". Click here see the Contax C/Y Canon Table.

The 85mm F2.8 Sonnar MM may need its rear fin filed down slighty (as described here in the 100mm F2 Planar Review). Hopefully we will receive some more feedback and confirm this.

I have the 85/2.8 Sonnar AE version (S/N 6688xxx). Lens markings indicate that it was made in Japan. With this version, I had to do some light filing on the aperture lever/fin in order to clear the mirror box due to a very slight rub that prevented me from stopping down the lens. After about 15 seconds of very light filing, lens now work perfectly on my 5D.

Sonnar T* 85/2.8 MM made in Japan.

Fits OK on my 5D without modifications.
Tried with 2 cheap adapters (with and without chip) from (2 different) German ebay sellers.
Infinity focus OK.
Center sharpness very good.
Border/corner sharpness good from f/4.
Slight purple/magenta fringing on highlights.

I have Sonnar 85 f2.8 MM made in West Germany and had to do no modifications to work with 5D and af-confirmed chip adapter (from e Bay).
Lens is pritty sharp even wide open, Ca is well controlled, rendered colours are saturated zeiss quality.

The 85mm F2.8 is better controlled lens than the F1.4 which has a questionable reputation. The 85mm Sonnar also has the benefit of being smaller & lighter, thus a nice travel lens.

I've tried the Contax 85mm f2.8 Sonnar (AE version) on my Canon 5D mark II with two different adapters.

With a thick german adapter I have had to file the diaphragm protection on the rear of the lens and 2mm of the fin.

With a thinner german adapter the mirror hits the rear of the lens, even after the modification.

With both adapters I have got infinity focusing.

My Contax CZ 85/2.8 AE version does not work on my 5D Mark I. The mirror hits the rear fin. I use a cheapish ebay C/Y-EF adapter that works for me with the 28/2.8, 35/2.8, 50/1.4 and 50/1.7.

Shaving the fins is very easy, the same needs to be done with the Contax 100mm F2 Planar. More info here: http://www.pebbleplace.com/Personal/Contax_100mm_Planar_Pt_III.html
