Leica 21-35mm F3.5-F4 ASPH Vario-Elmar-R
ROM, Model Number 11274

POSSIBLE INCOMPATIBILITY WITH CANON 5D - Reported June 6, 2008

Today I received the following email -

Quote:
... As a 21-35 asph Owner I made the experience that just removing the plastic shroud of the zoom did nevertheless generate Problems with the Canon 5D. The mirror was still blocked from 21mm just to the roundabout 22 oder 23 mm position! My estimation is, that there has to be removed also about 0.2 or 0.3 mm of the metal resting at the backside to guarantee proper function at 21-23 mm. Maybe, this is just a problem of certain samples of the 5D. The mine is one I bought not even one month ago.

This is the first comment we have received regarding the Canon 5D ---NOT--- working with the 21-35mm. Previously the database showed "S" (remove shroud); I have updated the database to shot "I" (means "iffy"). So, the shroud still has to be removed, but this is no guarantee with the 5D.

See Leica Canon compatibility table: http://www.pebbleplace.com/Personal/Leica_db.html

While this news is disappointing, it's great feedback and hopefully will help other Canon 5D owners. Thank you Dirk for your input! Smile I have used the Leica 21-35mm successfully with the Canon 1Ds. The lens was sold to a 1Ds Mark II owner and it worked fine with his 1Ds Mark II also. The database still shows "S" for the Canon 1Ds family (ie - the "FF" column).

I was cleaning some old emails today and ran across this reply I sent to reader a couple years ago.

Quote:
It's been 2 or 3 years since I did this, so the memories are a bit faded:

1) Remove screws 1, 2 and 3 with a good philips screwdriver, press firmly so it does slip and round off the slots
2) You may need to loosen the two screws holding the ROM contact bar in place
3) The plastic shroud made sit under the contact bar, but I don't recall the those screws actually going through it
4) The shroud will lift out after that, it won't take much force or pressure, there were no spring clips or anything like that
5) While lifting out the shroud, it's edges with catch on the aperture arm and inner barrel, so you may have to wiggle it a bit.

I know it was really easy and only took about 30 seconds. I'm pretty sure I loosened the ROM contact screws, but remember that not being necessary. The shroud is a flimsy piece of plastic and I think its function is too keep dust and debris for going inside the mechanism. I remember thinking I could take a Dremel tool it is and cut down the shroud so the mirror wouldn't catch. I never bothered. After removing the shroud I did put the 3 screws back into their respective holes. This way I knew I wouldn't loose them, but I also did this just in case they held something else in place. I don't think they held anything else in place, but you never know. I did a quick search and it appears my memory is still intact Smile Just the three screws -

It sounds like this will work just fine a on 5D too.
