CONTAX 50mm F1.4 PLANAR
Adapter and fit feedback
www.pebbleplace.com/Personal/Contax_db.html

This thread is for ongoing discussions and experiences regarding the 50mm F1.4 Planar on the Canon dSLRs such as the 40D, 1D Mark III, 1Ds Mark III, Digital Rebels and all other Canon dSLRs. If adding an entry about a lens & adapter, please include:

1) Whether the lens is a AE or MM
2) Whether the lens is made in Germany or Japan
3) Which adapter you are using
4) If the lens works properly at its minimum focus distance and at infinity

NOTE - THIS THREAD IS FOR THE F1.4 VERSION - NOT THE F1.2 OR F1.7.

You may also which to consider the New Zeiss 50mm F2 Makro-Planar ZF. I purchased this lens in April 2008 and have been using it with a Canon 1Ds Mark III. The lens is proving to be quite nice. The review is here: http://www.pebbleplace.com/Personal/Zeiss_ZF_50mm_Macro.html

Here are some pictures of a Contax 50mm F1.4 AE; I sold this lens awhile back. May as well get some added use out of the images Smile Use of these images without my written permission is not permitted. In other words, if you see these pictures on Ebay, the seller stole the images.

One thing that should be added is pre-EF-s crop bodies. My Zeiss 50mm, for instance, will scratch the mirror box if I try and put it on my 10D. I may file down the flange a bit so that it won't scrape, but it is an issue. It fits inside the EF-s ring on my 30D.

The 50/1.4 hits the mirror when shot vertically [on a Canon 5D], but does not when shot horizontally.

Both the 50/1.4 and 1.7 hit the mirror [on a Canon 5D]

This is my original input. I just wanted to add that I believe it to be more of an adapter issue than a problem with the lens. I tend to keep the same adapter on each lens and have not tried switching adapters to see if that fixes it. I have a fotodiox pro adaptor on this lens.

CANON 5D FEEBACK WITH A CAMERAQUEST ADAPTER
SUCCESS!!!

This past week "I. Asha" submitted the following feedback regarding the Contax 50mm F1.4 MM (not AE) (I did clean up the format) -

Quote:

The following contax lenses worked on my Canon 5D using the CameraQuest adapter:

AE MOUNT

• Contax 25mm F2.8 AE
• Contax 28mm F2.8 AE
• Contax 35mm F2.8 AE
• Contax 60mm F2.8 AE

MM MOUNT

Contax 50mm F1.4 MM
• Contax 85mm F2.8 MM
• Contax 28-85mm MM
• Contax 35-135mm MM
• Contax 80-200mm F4 MM

Surprisingly, the Contax 100mm F3.5mm MM would not work. Additionally, a Yashica ML 21mm F3.5 worked fine.

No changes to the database since the lens was already marked "I". Click here see the Contax C/Y Canon Table.
