POSSIBLE COMPATIBILITY

Today I received the following email -

This runs contrary to most people's experience, but you never know. Since removing the shroud on the 28-90 poses a risk of losing a spring and the lens being sent in for service, I'm still leaving it as a "NO" in the Leica database. Hopefully people will follow the links to this thread and more user will contribute to the thread. The key variable here is probably adapter thickness.

It is very easy to shave the shroud as I done on my lens. Be happy with your 28-90 on a 5D mark 2 !!

I have not seen a 28-90 ASPH in person. Is this a plastic shroud? How did you shave it? Thanks.

It is in metal... But very easy to shave. It is not easy to explain in english !... :-/ If your understand french : j'ai limé ce cache métallique du 28-90 Leica avec une petite lime à métaux. Il suffit de faire un cache avec du scotch pour que la poussière ne pénètre pas dans l'objectif, puis de limer en tenant l'objectif droit afin que la poussière tombe par terre. Je me suis fait aidé d'une seconde personne pour le maintien de l'objectif. Le limage est très facile car le cache est fin, il suffit juste de détacher le rebord (dont on voit la partie restante sur la photo du post précédant).

I don't speak french, but I know someone who does. This is his translation -

I filed the metal hood of the 28-90 with a small metal file. All you have to do is make a mask with tape to avoid the metal dust to get on the glass, and to hold the lens straight so that the dust falls off on the floor. I had someone help me hold the lens. The filing is very easy because the hood is very thin, you only need to remove the border (which you see on the remaining part of the picture in the previous post).

I must say, you're one of the bolder 28-90 owners out there Smile This is the first such modification I've seen for the 28-90. Most Canon owners attack the mirror in the 5D (or whatever Canon dSLR they are using). Thank you for the information.

For others reading this post, before undertaking such as effort, it may worth checking out Leitax. David LLado at Leitax said they have a conversion kit for the 28-90 (this was about 2 months ago). I'm not sure if he's officially launched a commercially available product. I have no affiliation with Leitax, just sharing the info.
