Hello All, I have read much about mounting Leica R lenses to EOS bodies as well as reviews of adapters and lens recommendations. Unfortunately, I have not found much mention of 5D MII compatibility. I have an old Leitz Wetzlar Macro-Elmarit-R 60mm f2.8 from my film days. I now primarily use a Canon 5d MII. I am a still life photographer (art photographer) and use the MII for shooting most of my jobs except when budget allows for rental of a full digital back/4x5 kit. I have canon L lenses but can't help be curious if my old 60mm could resolve more detail than the canon lenses. Whenever I see reviews of aspherical/macro lenses , they mostly write about macro, wide open, shallow DOF applications and not much attention to stopped down testing. Since I shoot with flash or hot lights, and usually flat works of art (paintings) with occasional sculpture I want the sharpest most DOF and lowest barrel distortion and pincushion possible. The new Zeiss 50mm f/2.0 Makro-Planar ZE Macro Lens maybe a contender but I wonder of my old lens could hold its own. My questions are : 1.Does the 5d MII have a mirror clearance issue with the old 60mm I mention ? anybody know? the chart by serial number has a ? in the 5d row. 2. Does "Live View" functionality via canon remote camera control remain when body not connected to a canon lens (without data contact strip). This would be ideal for focusing since I am using tripod and manual exposure shooting only anyway. 3. Modern digital lenses are built now with special coatings to filter stray light that digital sensors can see, the absence of the this on old analog lenses may cause flare, ghosting, chromatic aberration, etc. ?
I know all I have to do is buy an adapter to check all this out but don't want to risk damaging my camera body plus the few hundred dollars for the best adapter could otherwise be put to the Zeiss lens instead of going through all this.
Any advise or past experience or testing would be helpful, Thanks for reading the long winded post.. Eric , NYC

I use the 60mm Macro on my 5D for film.
Q.Does the 5d MII have a mirror clearance issue with the old 60mm I mention ? anybody know? the chart by serial number has a ? in the 5d row. A. No problem at all , mirrir clearance is no issue
Q. Does "Live View" functionality via canon remote camera control remain when body not connected to a canon lens (without data contact strip). This would be ideal for focusing since I am using tripod and manual exposure shooting only anyway. A. Not sure but I think it doesn't work because I didn't read anything about people using it during film
Q. Modern digital lenses are built now with special coatings to filter stray light that digital sensors can see, the absence of the this on old analog lenses may cause flare, ghosting, chromatic aberration, etc A. No ghosting problems etc on my system
I only found one problem but i guess that's a specific problem for my lens: I can focus further that endless.
