I have a Canon 1DS (first model) and 1D Mark II.
When I use certain adapters or extension tubes on these cameras I get an Error Message and it will not take a picture.
I regularly use Leica R lenses on these cameras with many different brands of adapters.
I bought a Leitax adapter and installed I on my 80-200 mm lens. When I tried it on my cameras I got the error message. When I contacted Leitax they said it works for others, this is the same answer I get about this problem from the other equipment suppliers that doesn't work with these cameras. I removed the Leitax mount and replaced the screws in the Leica mount, then attached one of my cheap adapters from China. It works fine with this adapter and always has.
I also experienced the same error message problem with my Kenko Extension Tubes for Canon C/AF 36mm, and an adapter that I bought to use my Canon FD lenses on these cameras. I can use Leica extension tubes without a problem with the adapters that work on the lenses.
I would appreciate any feedback from others that have experienced this same problem and better yet from readers that have solved this problem.
Thank you,
Alan

Does your Leitax adapter have the Dandelion chip added? Also, there is a micro switch on the 1-series that needs to be tripped, so I do not know if the earlier Leitax adapters had the necessary flange on the adapter to trip that switch. I just got a Leitax adapter for the the Canon 1Ds Mark III and it works fine. I think Canon removed the micro switch on the Mark III's. Do a search on "Canon 1 Series" + "Micro Switch" and see what Google returns.
