CONTAX 100mm F2.0 PLANARAdapter and fit feedbackwww.pebbleplace.com/Personal/Contax_db.htmlThis thread is for ongoing discussions and experiences regarding the 100mm F2.0 Planar on the Canon dSLRs such as the 40D, 1D Mark III, 1Ds Mark III, Digital Rebels and all other Canon dSLRs. If adding an entry about a lens & adapter, please include:
1) Whether the lens is a AE or MM 2) Whether the lens is made in Germany or Japan 3) Which adapter you are using 4) If the lens works properly at its minimum focus distance and at infinityNOTE - THIS THREAD IS FOR THE F2.0 VERSION - NOT THE F3.5 SONNAR.

The 100mm F2.0 Planar earned a "IFFY" classification due to the metal fin on the rear lens mount. This fin need to be file down ~1mm in order to mount on a Canon body. See the 100mm F2.0 Planar review more information 100mm F2 Planar Review - PebblePlace.com. Once the fin is filed, proper fit should be easy. I've had three copies of the 100/2 - both AE and MM - and they have performed well on a 5D, 1Ds, 1Ds2 or 1Ds3 without any infinity focus issues. My current adapter is a HappyPageHK focus confirmation adapter (HappyPageHK is the seller's EBay ID). In the past I've used Cameraquest and DSLRexchange (no longer making adapters). I'm currently using a MM copy on a 1Ds3. If the adapter is too thick, it can be extremely hard (possibly impossible) to fit on the lens mount. HappyPageHK adapters are generally 1.425mm and those have fit fine without having to use much force.

It seems this thread has bubbled its way to the top of the Google search list. Unfortunately these forums are not directly tied to my website, so here some are links at PebblePlace.com if you're trying to research the Contax 100mm F2.0 Planar lens - Contax 100mm Planar Review with sample images -http://www.pebbleplace.com/Personal/Contax_100mm_Planar.htmlPhoto galleries with Contax 100mm Planar images from the Canon 1Ds, Canon 1Ds Mark II and Canon 1Ds Mark III - http://www.pebbleplace.com/Personal/Photographs/Pages/Hawaii_-_Big_Island.htmlhttp://www.pebbleplace.com/Personal/Photographs/Pages/Alaska.htmlhttp://www.pebbleplace.com/Personal/Photographs/Pages/Texas.htmlA database showing which manual focus Contax C/Y lenses can fit (and not fit) a Canon 35mm dSLR via adapter -http://www.pebbleplace.com/Personal/Contax_db.html

Updated the Contax 100mm F2 Planar review yesterday - a couple new paragraphs here and there. Also, added a new consolidated gallery of just Contax 100mm F2 Planar pictures taken with the Canon 1Ds, Canon 1Ds Mark II and Canon 1Ds Mark III.

C/Y 100mm F/2 Planar MM works on my 5D MKII with big_is and happypagehk adapters. No issues.
Correction: The 100mm f/2 MM had already been modified when I bought it. The guide tab and diaphragm tab had been ground down.

C/Y Planar 100/2 with Big_is AF confirm adapater. - No issues on 5DII - Doesn't even mount on my 5D - I will have to file down the fin a tad. Even though it mounts and works fine on the 5DII, I'm noticing a mark where in the body due to the fin. So filing it down a bit should be okay Currently my favorite lens. Great lens

Yep, it's hard not to like the 100mm Planar The ZE version is much larger because of the macro functionality, and for portrait use, I much prefer the size of the original Planar. I've only used the 100 ZE a couple times and so far it seems pretty nice. This is the 100 ZE:

The image is sort of 3D, but thus far I feel the original Contax 100mm Planar (AE & MM) have more 3D kick. The 3D aspect is really location specific, so my opinion may change if I net a whole bunch of 3D images one day. But for now, I think the Contax has more of 3D rendering.
Some more pictures from the Zeiss 100mm F2 Makro-Planar ZE here: http://www.pebbleplace.com/Galleries/4_Zeiss_100mm_ZE.html
And a Leica M9 & 75mm F2 Summicron-M APO comparison to the 100mm ZE: http://www.pebbleplace.com/Personal/Canon_1Ds_Mark_III_Blog/Entries/2010/4/2_ZEISS_100mm_ZE_VERSUS_LEICA_75mm_APO.html

Revisited the Contax 100mm Planar review and updated it for 2010. It's been awhile since updating it, it was due. Some pictures added to the review from the 1Ds Mark III as well.
Contax 100mm F2 Planar Lens Review
I also picked a Zeiss 100mm F2 Makro-Planar ZE (again). I was going to write a review, but then never really got around to it. After using the Contax 100mm Planars again, I decided that the new ZE may indeed be sharper. So bought one (again) because I felt compelled to compare. After I get a good portfolio of the 100 ZE images, I'll publish a review. Right now the portfolio is pretty thin - need to shoot more
