Hi Riccardox
Purely personal advice...
Of course FF. You could consider Canon 1DsMark II or III, 5D Mark II or Nikon D3X if money is not a concern. Otherwise, Canon 5D or Nikon D700, Canon 1Ds Mark I, etc.
Why FF? Leica lenses are so expensive, do you really only want to use 50% of them?
I'm currently using Canon 5D with Leica 100/2.8, 180/2.8APO, it is very nice!
Am considering Leica 280/4APO, 90/2AA, ...maybe even 400/4APO. My opinion is majority of Leica APO lenses are gems and have collectible potential for future. After age of Kern and Kinoptik, these are the latest, finest and yet only choices for sharpest APO lenses made in Germany.
Cheers

A 40D vs 50D won't change the look of the files because the digital negative is the same size. If you want to experiment with manual lenses, I feel a 5D or 1Ds would get you more value in terms of experience the film FOV and DOF. A Canon 1Ds has limited ISO performance and most people don't go above ISO 400, so if you can live with ISO 100-400, then the 1Ds is a very inexpensive option these days - and a great camera with the 1-series quality. If you need ISO, then a used 5D is the next option. Though, with a 5D you might have some clearance issues with various alternative lenses. The 5D is a nice camera, but if you plan to shoot lots of "alternative lenses" (ie - Contax and Leica), I suggest the 1Ds because that will eliminate most of the mirror clearance issues. Good luck
