CONTAX 18mm F4.0 DISTAGON
Adapter and fit feedback
www.pebbleplace.com/Personal/Contax_db.html

This thread is for ongoing discussions and experiences regarding the 18mm F4 Distagon on the Canon dSLRs such as the 40D, 1D Mark III, 1Ds Mark III, Digital Rebels and all other Canon dSLRs. If adding an entry about a lens & adapter, please include:

1) Whether the lens is a AE or MM
2) Whether the lens is made in Germany or Japan
3) Which adapter you are using
4) If the lens works properly at its minimum focus distance and at infinity

NEW REVIEW AVAILABLE

The Contax C/Y 18mm F4 Distagon review has been rewritten after using a second copy with the Canon 1Ds Mark III. The review can be found here: http://www.pebbleplace.com/Personal/Contax_18mm_F4_Distagon.html

LATEST ADAPTER INFO WITH A CANON 1DS MARK III

Currently I am using the 18mm Distagon on Canon 1Ds Mark III with a HappyPageHK adapter purchased around June 1, 2008. The 18/4 is a MM lens and work fine with HappyPageHK adapter. His auction have a notice warning against some possible MM lens issues. The 18/4 Distagon does not have such a pin, so there is no problem. This HappyPageHK adapter is ~1.445mm thick - that's .02mm thicker than his older ones. So far I have not had any infinity focus issues.

For some added documentation - here's a picture of the 18mm Distagon F4 AE mount. Notice the angled retaining ring holding the rear element:

And this is a picture of MM mount:

Thus far it looks like a the AE version is more likely to work with the Canon 5D - probably due to the different retaining ring design. Either will work on the Canon 1Ds and 1.6x bodies.

Hi,

I seem to have a CZ18mm MM version (with green 22) that has a slooped retainer ring on the rearelement. The lens is made in West Germany. Is this rare?. I have not yet dared to try it on my 5D, using new (08-2010) Happypage adapters, for fear of the mirror grazing the rear element. So far the 85/1,4 AE, the 50/1.4 AE and the 135/2,8 AE all work. The 28/2.8 AE it catches the mirror i.e. it swings up takes a shots and stays in upward position until the lens is taken from infinity. I still have to try 85/2.8, 50/1.7 MM and the dreaded 18mm. I'll report back when I have more info. (Not sure if there is much interest for it nowadays, but reading all provided here has been both great help and entertainment..

A West Germany MM lens is somewhat uncommon, not "rare', but uncommon. The HappyPageHK contax adapters have been running a bit thick in my opinion, so there is a good chance it will be okay on the 5D. I do not think the mirror can hit the rear element. Isn't the element just slightly below the retaining ring? I've had the mirror hang on the rear of a lens before. All I had to do was unmount the lens and the mirror finished its cycle. Just remove the lens very carefully, very slowly (if the mirror sticks). Good luck.

If it is, it's frightfully close. I think I saw a copy once being sold on Ebay that had just a little "nick"on the rearelement. I don't know how to be sure , so I guess I'll just have to change it....
